Canon EF 100mm f/2 USM Lens Review

Released back in mid 1991, Canon EF 100mm f/2 USM along with its 85mm f/1.8 cousin is one of the most affordable medium telephoto lenses in Canon's modern arsenal. Priced at ~US$350 (as of October 2007), it remains within the reach of amateur photographers looking for a portrait type lens.

Canon EF 100mm f/2 USM Lens Review

The Canon EF 100mm f/2 USM Lens - meet the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens' twin sibling. Put these two lenses side by side and you will need to read the numbers to tell them apart. That is a good thing. The 100 f/2 shares the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens' solid build quality.

I bought my Canon EF 100mm f/2 USM lens in 1996 because I needed a fast lens for concert work; I couldn't afford any of the "L" series zooms. Years later, as I look over the images it's produced, I can say that it's one of the finest lenses I've ever used. [Image above: Chris Cornell himself.

Superb II

This is a follow-up to my 2015 review. This lens still continues to blow me away in full frame format. It has to be one of Canon's most underrated lenses. It excels in all possible ways. My prior review primarily focused on landscape photography at smaller apertures.

Great lens for the price

I picked this lens up from Amazon used for $250. The focus on it is fast and mostly accurate and it allows you to get good pictures in many situations. Only issue I've noticed with the lens is that there's a moderate anount of chromatic abbretion when using it in sunny weather at a larger aperture.

Canon EF 100mm f/2 USM review by sonylover1

This is my favourite astrophotolens. And I use it with success photographing babys in low light situation. You can use in streetphoto without people realising you in fact are zomming in with a 160 mm equivalent mount on a 7D. Recommended!

A true gem! Sharp wide open.

Prone to flares wide open..

This is one of my favorite lens!!

Outstanding lens for macro work, but equally great for portraiture. Superb sharpness. Best to manual focus using a tripod for macro images. Canon is all I use because it's the best !

I no longer have this lens, but I really enjoyed it while I did. The quality it produces is really excellent. AF is very quick and responsive and it works great in low light. My only complaint is that the build quality could have been better.

Sharp wide-open; fantastic bokeh; responsive AF; physically a small and compact lens for the focal length

build could be more durable.

Great for travel

Excellent optics. Light weight. Great portrait lens. I use it for travel because it is light and compact. Beats a heavy telephoto zoom.

For this price? Sheeeeeeeeeet

I bought this lens because I cannot afford a 70-200 f4IS and darn sure cannot afford the 2.8. I want the f4 non IS, but the 100 f2 was a good compromise. I really LOVE how this lens pops from 2.0-2.8. People think I photoshop my images in because they look almost 3 dimensional.

Bokeh and Length; The photos reaally seperate from the background

CA in bright light (Can be fixed in Post Processing
