Gary Wolstenholme reviews the second version of a 16-35mm zoom lens from Canon featuring a fast constant aperture of f/2.8.
The Canon EF 16-35mm F2.8 L II USM has a lot to offer. It is water resistant and has a wide angle. With improved image quality, you can use to shoot professional grade photos. It comes with three high-precision aspherical lens elements. The circular aperture delivers a natural background blur when shooting at wider apertures. With this lens, you also get a ring type USM, internal focusing, and new AF algorithms for better autofocusing.
With the Canon EF 16-35mm F2.8 L II USM, you get high quality images with excellent color. This lens does an excellent job of capturing natural colors and reproducing them.
This lens is well constructed and worthy of its L Series designation. The best part is that the lens is lightweight.
The large 82mm filter size is a new feature. High quality filters offer many advantages. The larger end helps to reduce the comfort of holding the lens a little. However, it delivers better image quality and is worth it. The focus and zoom rings are easy to use and the perfect size.
This lens is weather sealed to protect against moisture. The inside of the lens is gasketed, but the filter is needed to completely seal the lens. The lens remains the same size, but the inner barrel expands from 28mm from just 16mm.
Typically Canon L lenses have an 8-blade diaphragm. The Canon EF 16-35mm F2.8 L II USM only has seven blades. The circular shape of the 16-35 L II's blades help create desirable round-shaped OOF highlights.
The f/2.8 maximum aperture is perfect. It is fast and delivers the desirable results. A variety of lenses add different parameters for shooting wide open. This lens provides exposures that are wide open and can remain the same over the full focal length range.
Anyone looking for a high quality lens will love the Canon EF 16-35mm F2.8 L II USM. It is fast and accurate. The best part is that you can use it to take photos in the rain or underwater. There is a lot to love about the Canon EF 16-35mm F2.8 L II USM.

I bought this for my wife for Christmas, the results are stunning, super sharp and shoots nicely in fading light. Very happy with my purchase as is she.
I do a lot of mountian bike photography and this lens gets me close to the action and allows me to get creative with different angles. The images come out super sharp and the F2.8 is great for the low light I shoot in most of the time.
Fast auto-focus; Superior build quality; Super-sharp images
I only give this a "9" because it's slightly less sharp than the 70-200/2.8 IS which is not surprising. However I feel that 9 is still plenty. This lens has finally brought me the wider half of the Zoom Holy Duo (the other naturally being the 70-200).
+ sharp + bright + fast and accurate AF + weather sealing
none really
I bought this lens rather cheaply because of the damaged front part of the barrel with warped filter thread. Looked horrible but the filter could still be mounted. I got that fixed later while repairing an unrelated damage case.
very sharp; silent and accurate AF; tough build; ..
The zoom ring is towards the rear of the lens and may be slightly too far back to be controlled comfortably between the thumb and third finger by some users. While strong at around f/8, the resulting MTF results from technical testing were otherwise rather disappointing.
Proven pedigree
Showing its age slightly
It may be pricey, but the Canon 16-35mm full-frame lens is well established. What Digital Camera's Canon 16-35mm lens review finds out if it's still worth splashing out for

Had this on my 1DX mark II on assignment in Hong Kong. Brand New Lens. Placed the camera on a table and noticed the lens coming loose off the base. It had broken off exposing the inside electronics. Very very very poor build quality.
well the lens id great only in small apertures above 5.6 before that there is a terrible vignetting unacceptable for the price ,if anyone thinks you can fix it with post ,remember for night shots you will create a lot of banding and noise ,i wish i would never buy this lens ,but get the one with is...
Bought this lens for low light photos at family events. This is a very fast focusing lens and seems to gather light from almost nowhere. I have used it to take pictures in doors where there was nearly no light and was astonished at the performance.
