Canon's EF 70-200mm f4.0L IS USM really delivers the goods on both cropped and full-frame bodies. The range may not extend as far as 70-300mm models, but the optical quality is superb and as an 'L' lens, the build quality is also excellent.

The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM ($1,349 direct) isn't as lauded as the company's f/2.8 IS lens with the same zoom range, but it's priced about $650 less, making it an attractive option for shooters who can live with a slower lens.
Optical stabilization system; Fixed aperture through zoom range; Relatively light; Sharp images
Edges soft when zoomed; Adding a tripod collar is expensive
The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM lens captures impressively sharp images and is optically stabilized. It's a good option for shooters who can't afford an f/2.8 zoom. It is similar in design and price to the Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/4G ED VR($1,396.95 at Amazon) lens. It's compatible with full-frame Canon cameras, and can also be used with APS-C bodies, where it acts more like a 112-320mm lens due to the 1.6x crop factor. It's very sharp across the frame at its widest focal length, but performance at the edges suffers when set to 200mm. Like other Canon L zooms, the lens features a white finish rather than a traditional black. It measures 6.8 by 3 inches (HD) and weighs 1.7 pounds. A hood is included, but not a tripod collar. Adding one helps to better distribute weight when used with a tripod and adds $210 to the cost. It supports 67mm filters and can focus on objects as close as 3.9 feet; that's ...

I bought this lens rather than the f2.8 version because of it's size and weight. If compared to the f2.8 version, this lens is approximately half the weight, and noticably smaller. This lens is a joy to hold and use because it's really light, and yet it produces outstanding pictures.
Very lightweight, built like a tank; Zoom ring and the focus ring are all smooth
Sound of the motor is audible
I have used this lens for about two months now. Focus speed is lightning fast and accurate and the L glass is perfection. It's a little heavy for a walk around lens (I use the 17-85 mm for that) but it is always in my bag. You won't be disappointed.
I believe I got mine in 2006 or 2007 and it has never disappointed. The f4 works for most outdoor use and it is a lens you can carry easily compared to the 2.8 with foot. The amazing quality really showed when I used it with my now retired film body, but also shows when my 17-85 is at telephoto and...
Amazing image quality and image stabilization
No weaknesses; Nicking it on price would not be fair because the big white Canon lenses are top tier and it seems like they spare nothing to make them
Canon 70-200mm f/4L IS USM is a premium quality lens from canon. It is one of the lens that every photographer should have in their bag.
Absolutely no regrets in purchasing a used EF 70-200 from Adorama! The lens itself is amazing although the weight (while less than the f/2.8)takes some getting used to. Easy to use with fast focus!
Durable; Easily Interchangeable; Fast / accurate auto-focus; Rugged
