Best portrait lens in the Canon lens lineup

Best lens for portraits, This holds true for both cropped sensors and full frame sensors. The wide aperture is giving me excellent and very sharp focus in the death of field area.

Sharp as all get out

This is a great lens for portrait photography. With f/1.8 you can get a good shallow DOF and good bokeh. It's sharp as a tack and the focusing is fast and accurate. The construction is not up to L lens standards but this isn't an L lens.

Consistent Output; Durable; Quick Focus; Sharp Focus

Weak Casing

Great Sharp Lens

I bought this lens for low light work. It has a good reputation for sharpness. It's light, very sharp, focuses well and for portraits gives a nce depth of field. Everything I wanted.

I don't have any cons right now. I felt it was a good investment for the money and it hasn't let me down.

Fast / accurate auto-focus; Lightweight; Sharpness; speed

A great lens to own. You will still be using this wonderful glass into your 4th or 5th Camera upgrade... in the next decade or so. It's that good. It's like having a 50mm lens on a cropped 1.6x sensor. Same FOV.

Bang great AF accuracy with manual overide; No moving parts; no focus barrel movements; Weird but wonderfull lens hood; (Try attaching the hood in reverse and let them go crazy trying to figure out what kind of lens you got; because it looks...weird! Try it it; its fun.

Easily spotted by photographer friends and asked to be borrowed..; annoying

With Canon Portrait lenses, less can be more

An outstanding portrait lens for Canon shooters on a tight budget, or even those who can afford anything. Not as beautiful as the 85/1.2, but smaller, lighter and quicker handling.

Fast f/1.8 maximum aperture; good bokeh; sharp from corner to corner; fast focus; cheap

Bokeh not as smooth as the pro lenses; plasticky build

Excellent lens but watch out for chroma

This lens is donkeys years old....I've had one since my film days with a Canon EOS620! It's a keeper for sure and at the current price an absolute bargain. I love the handling; it feels just right on my 50D or 760D and the focussing is blisteringly fast and accurate.

Consistent Output; Durable; Easily Interchangeable; Quick Focus; Rugged; Sharp Focus; Strong Construction

Chromatic Aberrations

Great lens for the price

A great high aperture lens for a great price. Alot cheaper than the L offerings and alot more usable. L quality lens without the price tag.

Easy To Use; Excellent In Low Light; Fast Shutter Speed

Excellent lens

Outstanding lens at a fraction of the price of the L-series. If you're looking for a fixed lens, then you can't go far wrong with this beauty.
