Best lens for portraits, This holds true for both cropped sensors and full frame sensors.The wide aperture is giving me excellent and very sharp focus in the death of field area.

This lens is one of the classic Canon lenses. It is affordably priced, and produces professional quality portraits with sharpness and background bokeh which are wonderful and have something about them that makes you think 'Wow!'.

This is really a great lens. I remain blissfully unaware of what life is like for 85L shooters, but I have a hard time imagining how much better it really can be. I guess an extra stop is important, but for 4x the cost I don't think I'll ever try it - the 85/1.8 is too good in so many categories.

That Canon hasn't managed to replicate this lens at 50mm

The Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 is a nice piece of glass. Being an EF lens, it is compatible with all EOS cameras regardless of sensor size, which is a definite plus compared to EF-S lenses which are for crop (APS-C) bodies only, like the Canon 10D/20D/30D/40D/50D/60D/7D and Rebel/ xxxD series.

As expected by reading reviews on forums, this lens provides fantastic clarity. Beware of the chromatic aberration (causing purple blur on sharp contrast) between F1.8-2.8. I'm using it with my EOS 550D, which came with the 18-135 F3.5-5.6 kit and is practical but in my opinion the 85 F1.8 is a...
