The Canon EF-S 55-200mm is equivalent to a 88-400mm lens on a film camera. This makes it a great all-round telephoto lens that's capable of capturing the action even when it's a long way away; football, rugby and cricket matches are good examples, as well as most types of motorsports.
Pretty much this is a zoom lens that enhances any enthusiast photographer's capabilities of shooting moments at a far distance. It's quite useful, especially if you're a wildlife photographer, and don't want to scare the target (bird, reptile, etc.

I got this lens with my 500D and have used it too many times to count. It takes very good photos and the only flaw I can find is that the focus doesn't lock when set to auto-focus which may cause damage to the lens if turned accidentally, this problem has been fixed with the new model of the lens...

Gary Wolstenholme reviews this new telephoto zoom lens from Canon, the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM.
Great sharpness in the centre throughout the zoom range; Lightweight; Fast focusing; Effective stabiliser
Plastic lens mount may put some buyers off this lens; Quite expensive compared to its predecessor
Nice lens and focal distance. Size light enough to carry on camera all day. Long distant focus can be an issue in auto mode. Manual focus helps in that case. Great compliment to the standard lens that comes with most cannon EOS cameras.
Easily Interchangeable; Lightweight
