Canon EOS 100D review

With increasing numbers of potential DSLR owners now opting for compact system cameras, many manufacturers are now rationalising their DSLR range rather than expanding it. With Canon's EOS M being one of the newest compact system cameras on the market, it is perhaps surprising that the company has...

Canon EOS 100D

The Canon EOS 100D offers a satisfying experience for new photographers or those who are looking for a very compact entry into the world of SLRs. However, it might not be small enough to lure potential buyers away from a similarly priced mirrorless ILC with more features.

Extremely compact and lightweight; Excellent touchscreen; Very good image quality

Some users might find the design a little cramped; No built-in Wi-Fi; Short battery life compared to other SLRs

Canon EOS Rebel SL1

Canon bills the EOS Rebel SL1 ($649.99 list, body only) as the world's smallest digital SLR. There's no arguing about that; it's impressively small, making Canon's standard 18-55mm zoom lens look positively huge in comparison.

Compact design; Touch screen; Quick to start and focus; 4fps continuous shooting; Smooth live view focus experience; Microphone input; Good high ISO performance

Limited Raw burst shooting; Pentamirror viewfinder; Fixed rear LCD; May be too small for some hands

Canon EOS Rebel SL1 / 100D

The Canon EOS Rebel SL1, or 100D as it's known outside North America, is the company's latest entry-level DSLR and the smallest and lightest model with an APS-C sensor to date. Announced in March 2013, it's arguably the successor to the entry-level EOS Rebel T3 / 1100D and undoubtedly produced in...

World's smallest DSLR; Truly compact body, Good photo and video quality, 1080p movies with respectable continuous AF, Excellent touch-screen interface, Microphone input, Remote control over USB using PCs or Macs, New kit lens with very quiet AF and non-rotating barrel

Modest continuous shooting speed at 4fps; No built-in Wifi and no Canon accessory either; Screen doesn't flip-out; it's fixed in position; Basic auto exposure bracketing of three frames; No auto-panorama mode in-camera; Non adjustable AF area size in Live View; Loses size advantage once you fit most...

If you're looking for something which is truly portable, but still retains DSLR-type stylings and operability, take a look at the Panasonic G5 or the newer Panasonic G6

Canon EOS Rebel SL1

Canon's high-performing EOS Rebel SL1 is the tiniest digital SLR you can put your hands on, but it may be too small for some hands.

Canon EOS 100D - A Best Choice

Even if you are new to photography, you will not have any difficulty in using this Canon EOS 100D. It suits almost all the shooting conditions and delivers bright images.

The 3-inch touch screen; miniaturization of SLR design; Rubberized handgrip; APS-C sensor; the Creative Filters

9 point AF cross-type central sensor; reduced battery life; Price tag of Canon EOS 100D

Very good compact DSLR

It is a very good compact DSLR. Image quality also is good. The main reason why I bought this camera is the weight. Unfortunately if lack the remote wireless flash trigger and stereo microphone.

Canon EOS 100D review: The smallest and lightest digital SLR in the world matches the big boys in picture quality

The 18-megapixel EOS 100D is the literally smaller brother to the 700D sitting at the summit of Canon's APS-C sensor incorporating DSLR range. Indeed, the sales pitch for the 100D is that it is the world's smallest and lightest DSLR at the time of writing.

Smaller and lighter build makes carrying DSLR body and lens less of a drag; yet more compact proportions haven't obviously compromised picture quality

The lighter construction results in more obvious camera shake in lower light; no angle adjustable LCD plus a smaller handgrip than the 700D which costs just 50 quid more
