We have a number of these in use at our company. The scanner itself is the usual quality from HP that one would expect. The software on the other hand is really not worth installing as it is hopeless. Our experience shows that Omnipage software by Nuance works well with this device.

It took eight trys just to download the software, none of the buttons work and it finally works you either get error messages or the paper will jam.This scanner will not work with windows xp! Wish I knew this before buying.

This scanner worked perfectly for the first 5 months. I probably scanned 3000 pages of stuff. Then all of a sudden I could not "initialize scanner". I use it with my MacBook Pro. The scanner shows up in my "About This Mac", just not in the HP software anymore.

This machine is an excellent pieceof kit. However, if you are running Vista, you should not load the supplied software, unless HP are supplying a disk supporting Vista. My scanner stopped working after one use.

Purchased to replace Scanjet 5500C as its software would not run on Windows 7 and there were no W7 drivers. It was difficult to find an OCR scanner to run on Windows 7 and this was about the only one at a reasonable price.

I have had 3 versions of the HP Scanjet scanner; the present one the 5590. All have been decommissioned because they simply have a terrible computer interface. Be assured, eventually, your computer will not be able to recognize and/or initialize the Scanjet 5590 scanner.
