I had an older version of this scanner which was, like other HP products up to then, fast, efficient and as solid as a rock. It got involved in a lightning strike so had to be replaced.

As other consumers have noted, the flatbed part of this scanner works fine but is slow. The feeder works only when it wants to and that is only about half the time. It will also pretty much destroy some documents that get hung in the feeder and it chews them up.
What's not in the Box , Hi-Speed USB cable (compatible with USB 2.0 specifications), power cable, power supply (where applicable),ADF cleaning cloth, transparent materials adapter (TMA) for scanning slides and negatives, TMA instruction sheet, user's manual, setup poster, warranty sheet, CD-ROMs...
It took eight trys just to download the software, none of the buttons work and it finally works you either get error messages or the paper will jam. This scanner will not work with windows xp! Wish I knew this before buying.
none
all kinds of error messages
Liked the scanner functions it was supposed to handle. but a lousy product
Can't tel you of any pro's here
Scanner Freezes every time i scanned a document on auto document feeder and flatbed
Does great job scanning, but it is cheaper to replace than to fix if it breaks.
I have had 3 versions of the HP Scanjet scanner; the present one the 5590. All have been decommissioned because they simply have a terrible computer interface. Be assured, eventually, your computer will not be able to recognize and/or initialize the Scanjet 5590 scanner.
Build Quality; Paper Jams; slow; software
This scanner is pure disappointment. First of all the double sided scanning is slow because it routes the paper through the scanner 3 times: once to scan side 1, another for side 2, and a final run to turn it back the way it was.
Purchased to replace Scanjet 5500C as its software would not run on Windows 7 and there were no W7 drivers. It was difficult to find an OCR scanner to run on Windows 7 and this was about the only one at a reasonable price.
This is the 2nd unit I've owned. The 1st one I had for many years until the lamp started going bad, and the ADF was damaged a couple years ago. This brand new unit works great! I couldn't be more pleased. Not only did it cost way less than the 1st one ($300+ vs.
