Nikon 17-35mm f/2.8D ED-IF AF-S Nikkor review by dw_js

I originally purchased the lens to use on a D2x. It was great then because I didn't get to see the edges of the image circle......fast forward to a D700 and the edges are soft. I can't stop down enough to get rid of the softness.

built well

soft corneres; CA

almost new but dust particle inside

Used item described as clean almost new, in fact looks and feels like new, but there is a big pet-hair-like particle inside rear element. Too bad because it really seems to work like new.

Must have landscape lens!

I have many Nikkor lenses. This has to be the sharpest I have. Fantastic for landscape!! I see this lens as my go to for a lot of applications. I was worried about the size but not as big as my 24-70 2.8.

Welded to my DSLR

To me the mark of a great lens is a lens that you wind up using a lot. The AF-S 17-35mm is such a lens. I bought mine in 1999--19 years ago! I moved to it from the fine 20-35, looking to it for a wider angle and a closer close focus. I have never been disappointed with those features.

Great Wide Angle Zoom

Use it as your primary lens. Also, consider 50mm f/1.4 or f1.8 as secondary lens as prime. This lens is a bit heavy, but as with all SLRs, you already knew you would be carrying a bulky camera.

Durable; Easily Interchangeable; Excellet in low light; Fast / accurate auto-focus; Good Manual Focus; Nice Bokeh; Strong Construction

a bit expensive; Heavy

As a Nikon user, when Canon was producing full frame digital cameras and Nikon was spouting the advantages the APS sensor as a reason for not producing a full frame camera, you knew the full frame was going to come. SO, I didn't want to buy a lens that would be limited to the DX format.

great zoom range; build quality; fast

soft corners; soft corners; distortion

Okay so I've never had the real money to actually buy it so each time I've rented the lens. Perhaps the fact that it was a rental could have effected the outcome of my images, but at this point, lets assume that I had actually bought it.

Produces good image quality, Contrary to what other people believe, I think the weight is really nice; Gives my camera a center of mass and balance

Terrible auto focus; I don't know what 17-35 you're using because this one's auto focus is horrendous

A Worthy King of the Wide

This lens has rewritten many a rule about wide-angle photography.

Fast AF; minimal distortion; excellent resolution; excellent colour rendition; insignificant CA

Sample-to-sample variation; heavy and bulky

The perfect Lens for the wide angle nutter

This is a truly great lens, whisper quiet, fast focusing and you'll cut yourself on the results. Preferring the wide side of life this lens is rarely off of my D3 it just ticks all the boxes. Bright and with super Nikon build quality you can certainly buy this lens with total confidence.
