Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR

The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR ($699.95 direct) is one of several budget full-frame lenses that Nikon has released this year, which led many to speculate that an entry-level FX D-SLR camera was on the horizon.

Compact; Very sharp; Inexpensive; Full-frame coverage

Loads of distortion

Nikon 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G AF-S VR Lens

While I hope to create a full Nikon 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G AF-S VR Lens, my first priority is to include results from this lens in the lens comparison tools available on the site. This page currently exists because it is required by the database and content management systems for me to post information...

Nikon AF-S 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR Lens Review

Handling and features Performance Verdict Specification A standard zoom for FX format DSLRs covering wide angle to telephoto focal lengths without the size, weight or cost of f/2.8 equivalents.

Good sharpness in the centre throughout the zoom range; VRII stabilisation; Good build; Relatively compact and lightweight when compared to Nikon's other FX lenses

Distortion at both ends of the zoom range; Falloff of illumination towards the corners at maximum aperture

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR

The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR is an affordable walkabout lens for Nikon full-frame users who don't want to pay the substantial price premium for Nikon's more pro-level zooms.

Nikon Nikkor AF-S 24-85 mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR

In 2000 Nikon launched the Nikkor AF 24–85 mm f/2.8–4D IF lens but, as it didn't have an ultrasonic motor, two years later the line-up of that producer was complemented by a bit slower Nikkor AF-S 24–85 mm f/3.5–4.5G IF-ED, already equipped with such a motor.

good image quality in the frame centre; decent image quality on the edge of APS-C/DX; good correction of the longitudinal chromatic aberration; not bothersome distortion on APS-C/DX sensor; almost imperceptible coma on the smaller detector; moderate vignetting on APS-C/DX; silent and accurate...

slacks on the manual focus ring; weak image quality on the edge of full frame; very high lateral chromatic aberration and on both types of detectors to boot; noticeable spherical aberration; pronounced distortion at the ends of focal range on full frame; high vignetting level on the bigger detector,...

good walk around lens

I was looking for a good walk around lens with both in door and out door purpose .. a general lens .. the 24-85 meets that requirement, fast focus and good VR performance, for everyday use I would buy it again.

good working range

zoom a bit stiff but ok

I'm still in process of migrating from DX to FX, I had no zoom in this range, except the 18-200 VR which is a DX lens, a bit heavier, a bit slower a bit less sharp, the only lens I had in this range is the 50mm f1.8 AFS, which I use on the D800 and I HAVE to shoot at 1/125 or I get blurry pictures,...

VR; Light; Small; Decent price compared to other FX nikon zooms; I can shoot by hand at slow speeds and get sharp images :

The corners at 24 mm never get really sharp; if you pixel peep; they are soft; period; At 85 mm it is quite decent at f/8; Use the hood or a filter; the front lens is very exposed ; it's easy to touch it accidentally ; or even scratch; bumped against something

Nikon 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR AF-S Nikkor review by infocus

I chose this for my full frame D600 for general use, because the 24-120mm f4 is bigger, heavier and twice as expensive, and according to several tests not much better - and soft above 85mm.

Very convenient focal range; compact and very sharp except corners

Not perfect for full frame cameras; despite being kit lens for D600

Nice all purpose lens for D1 or D100

I bought this lens for my D100, since my older glass didn't give me the range I wanted with the D-se

Super fast focusing; lightweight; low cost; low distortion

Less range than other zooms; odd filter size

Great travel lens

Amazingly sharp, lighter than the pro level, and fast. A nice travel lens when you don't need 2.8. Several favorable reviews (Thom, Nasim, Ken) prompted me to give this lens a try, and with Amazons' terrific return policy I had nothing to lose.
