Nintendo Switch

It switches like magic! One second, you're using Nintendo Switch as a home console, and the next you're taking it with you as a portable system. It's totally awesome no matter which way you use it.

HD to handheld

When used as a home console, the Nintendo Switch lets you play a great range of cool games in immersive HD. If you wish to use it in handheld mode, the experience is still pretty stunning thanks to a multi-touch capacitive touch screen which can display a resolution of 1280 x 720.

The joy of Joy-Con

The Joy-Con controllers really give Nintendo Switch an edge on similar gaming devices. One of the best features is HD Rumble; imagine your Joy-Con is a glass. With HD rumble, you'll feel the difference as you add ice cubes and pour water into the glass. This sense of touch goes way beyond the normal vibrations you might have experienced in other controllers. Meanwhile the IR Motion Camera can detect shape, movement, and the distance of objects captured by the camera, adding an extra thrill to your gameplay.

A word to the grownups

Parental controls on Nintendo Switch allows you to manage how your family interacts with the device.

Hours of fun

Excellent battery life means the fun can last for more than six hours, depending on software and usage conditions. For example, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild can be played for about three hours on one charge.

A mountain of memory

There's plenty of memory to play with here. 32GB of internal memory, while storage space can be extended by simply using microSDHC or microSDXC cards.

Nintendo Switch review: Return of the king?

There is always plenty of attention afforded a new games console launch, not least when it has Nintendo slapped across the front. But after the relative failure of the Wii U, it seems there are more eyes on the company's new machine - the Nintendo Switch - than ever before.

Joy-Cons are versatile and well-built; easy to dock; handheld mode works well; up to 1080p 60fps graphics; you don't need the pricey accessories

Only 32GB without microSD card; no game in the box; no media streaming apps at launch; limited launch line-up

Nintendo Switch review: a brave and fascinating new console

Nintendo remains a puzzling phenomenon for a lot of modern gamers. The company never makes powerful consoles, or cool consoles; it never pushes the processing envelope, and it always seems a little eccentric when it comes to online infrastructure.

Nintendo dares. No other hardware manufacturer takes the kind of risks Nintendo so often does. Whether or not it ultimately pays off is no reason to ridicule a philosophy that may not have served the company well in recent history, but which did make them a household name.

Nintendo Switch Review – Revolutionary Piece of Innovative Hardware

The Nintendo Switch is finally here. After what felt like ages speculating as to what Nintendo's codename NX was, it feels almost surreal to finally hold what is undoubtedly Nintendo's coolest piece of hardware yet.

True console gaming on the go; Innovative modular design; Joy-Cons feel great; Clean and simple UI

Connectivity issues with left Joy-Con; Lack of features out of the box

As has been the case for past couple of generations in the home console space, Nintendo went in a different direction than either of its rivals (Sony and Microsoft) with the Switch . Once again, Nintendo's newest console does not engage the competition in a specs war.

Nintendo Switch review

One-part handheld and one-part console, Nintendo's latest piece of hardware wants to be the only device you need for gaming. In many ways it's a big success, offering an exceptional level of handheld graphical quality, before seamlessly transitioning into a home console – but this very adaptability...

Unique hybrid design; HD Rumble; Two controllers included; Bright; crisp; colorful screen

Joy-Cons charge only on console without accessory; Split D-pad; Oddly placed right analogue stick; Limited online service at launch

Nintendo Switch review: Redefining the games console

A revolutionary console. It doesn't fade in the face of PS4 or Xbox One, Nintendo strides down its own path. And for many it'll redefine on-the-go gaming, not just at-home gaming, thanks to top first-party titles.

Some of the best first-party titles on any console; Use at home or on the go; Joy-Cons are versatile and well-built; Up to 1080p 60fps graphics; You don’t need the pricey accessories;

No game in the box; No media streaming apps like Netflix; Less hardcore games lineup than the competition; Only 32GB storage without buying a microSD card;
