Far better than the kit lenses! Very nice bokeh for close ups of flowers and the like, and excellent for portraits. Very slightly soft at the corners at 70mm, but this isn't a biggie.

Former professional photographer looking for a "walking around lens". Something to keep on my Canon 7D (or any crop sensor camera) for most shooting situations. The expanded focal length at the wide end (17mm vs 24mm) is perfect for crop sensor cameras.
Wide focal length
The Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM is designed as an upgrade to the 18-55mm kit lenses supplied with most SLRs, and offers an interesting middle ground between fast zooms of the 17-50mm F2.8 type, and extended-range zooms in the 16-85mm class.
Useful combination of zoom range and relatively fast aperture; Very good image quality across most of the range; Compact size; Reasonably fast and near-silent autofocus; Effective image stabilisation
Somewhat weak image quality at wideangle (soft corners and chromatic aberration; Macro shooting a little impractical (very short working distance
No promises, but I would like to complete a full Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS C Lens review in the future. For now, please review the standard test results available for this lens and view the eye candy below.
thanks to snapdeal delivered a day before the committed date package was good but invoice was missing in the package got few cool pics with this lens i am sure i wont mount the kit lens unless i need some crazy stuff sharpness is good all over the image but a big problem with chromatic aberration...
The wide F2.8 aperture and image stabilisation has has allowed me to do some no-flash indoor work without using a tripod.
As meantioned in the description Wonderful all round lens with excellent low light imaging.
I've seen the review here which mentions Chromatic Aberration / Purple Fringing being not too well-controlled, but try as I might, I am unable to make this lens produce significant visible evidence of CA . I'm testing it on an EOS 80D, shooting RAW, Adobe Color Space.
Convenient focal-length range for a go-to carry-everywhere lens; Excellent sharpness throughout, Well-controlled CA, Silky feel to the zoom ring, No front-element rotation during A/F, Looks great, Light and compact, but not too light
No manual-focus over-ride; Focus ring rotates during A/F
With so much to talk about in this lens it would be easy to miss something important, such as the fact that it offers a bright f/2.8 aperture at 17mm. This is an amazing achievement that is all the more remarkable given the zoom's 4.1x focal-length range.
Great all-round lens
Non-internal focusing
