Sony E 35mm f/1.8 OSS (SEL-35F18) - Review / Lens Test Report

Given the recent announcements, Sony is finally getting serious about beefing up their lens lineup for the Sony NEX system - so far this has been a major weakness of the system. It seems as if they are feeling the heat introduced by the highly successful Fuji X-system.

Great Lens, excellent in low light

Great lens for traveling and portraits and in low lighting. Only problem is that cases for Nex 6 cameras don't fit with this lens which is crazy since it is only slightly larger than the kit lens.

Easy To Use; Lightweight; Reliable

Doesn't Fit Camera Case

Handling and features Performance Verdict Specification A prime lens with that provides an angle of view equivalent to a 52.5mm lens on a 35mm camera and sports a fast f/1.8 maximum aperture, optical image stabilisation and a lightweight, compact design.

Good build quality; Excellent sharpness; Lightweight; Low CA; Low distortion; Effective optical stabilisation

Maybe a touch expensive; Lens can struggle to focus accurately at distances shorter than half a metre

Excellent Definition

This lens is a bit of a luxury. I was able to justify it when my SELP1560 was mugged and I needed a lens in Japan. It gets rave reviews and I am not disappointed. I have added one photo chosen at random that shows the results hand held at f1.8 and 1/60sec.

SO WORTH IT

I bought this lens as a secondary to my kit lens and it has become my new primary lens. While 35mm can a bit awkward to use when taking pictures of people in a cramped space, it's PERFECT for shooting in 95% of the situations I'm in and this lens does WONDERFULLY in low light conditions.

Sony E 35mm f/1.8 OSS SEL35F18

I bought this lens as an additional for the kit power zoom, and it delivers image quality way above the kit one. Although price may be a bit steep, i think it is still a good buy with OSS and relatively fast (f/1.8) aperture.

Silent and fast focusing; PDAF supported; Pleasing colours and contrast; Stabilisation is reliable

Focus ring is a bit tough to spin; Steep price

When you're first buying into a lens system, whether you're a newbie or a seasoned vet, you should look for an inexpensive prime lens. The kit zooms that come with most interchangeable lens cameras these days usually suffer from compromises in their optical designs, and don't do these cameras...
