Sony FE 85mm F1.8 Review

Full-frame Sony mirrorless photographers have a wide range of prime lens options in the short telephoto range, but most of them carry a premium price tag. The FE 85mm F1.8 comes in at an attractive $599.99 cost compared with premium options like the $1,200 Zeiss Batis 1.8/85 and $1,800 Sony FE 85mm F1.4 GM, both of which have earned Editors' Choice honors. The FE 85mm F1.8 captures images that are sharper than the Batis, albeit with a stronger vignette and without in-lens stabilization. It's half the cost, so we're giving it the same rating and Editors' Choice honors. Design The FE 85mm ($549.67 at Amazon) is a squat, compact lens, measuring in at 3.2 by 3.1 inches (HD) and tipping the scales at just 13.1 ounces. Its black barrel is aluminum with a knurled focus ring. A lens hood is included—it reverses for storage—and the front element supports 67mm filters. The squat, light lens balances quite well on the a7R II. Like other FE lenses, the 85mm F1.8 covers the full-frame sensor ...

The Sony FE 85mm F1.8 is an affordable lens in a focal length ideal for portraits. Images are crisp, with pleasing blurred backgrounds when shot at a wide aperture.

Bright f/1.8 aperture; Extremely sharp; Dust and moisture resistant; Short telephoto focal length

Omits image stabilization; Strong vignette at wider f-stops

Worth every penny!

Absolutely worth every penny! I have purchased the f1.4 G master prior to purchasing these and I'm glad I returned the g-master and got these instead! Price is very reasonable and the quality of shots from these is outstanding! If you thinking of purchasing these lenses, don't! BUY THEM!

This is easily the best lens I've purchased. The IQ is second to none. I was torn between the Batis and the Sony but most reviews said the Batis only has the OSS advantage and the electronic features. Since my camera has IBIS I chose the Sony and I do not regret my choice.

Sony FE 85mm F1.8 Black Lens - Brand New review

To sum up we are happy Sony added a good quality instrument to their line-up which is also within financial reach of amateurs and less affluent professionals. I think if you decide to buy it you will enjoy it very much.

solid, sealed mechanical construction,, excellent image quality in the frame centre,, sensible image quality on the edge of the APS-C sensor,, low longitudinal chromatic aberration,, moderate lateral chromatic aberration,, lack of problems with spherical aberration,, negligible distortion,, slight...

image quality near the maximum relative aperture could have been a bit better,, significant vignetting on full frame.

Impressive image results

Having bought a A7 III, after changing from Nikon, I was looking for a prime lens that I didn't already have, taking into account using my existing lenses with a Commlite Nikon-Sony adapter. The 85mm F1.8 has given me impressive image results at an affordable cost.

Fast auto focus; Great Picture Quality; Lightweight

Sony FE 85mm f/1.8 ( SEL85F18 ) - Review / Test Report

Recently we reviewed the Zeiss Batis 85mm f/1.8 - as it turned out it's quite an awesome lens. However, the Zeiss lens isn't alone in its quest - it has a couple of Sony mates. There's the insanely expensive 85mm f/1.4 GM and a more mainstream option which we'll discuss here - the Sony FE 85mm...

best bang for the buck!

i own the 35mm 1.4 Zeiss/Sony lens and this lens seems to be sharper, and that is saying a lot because the 35mm lens is known for its sharpness...and it's $1000 more. used it for a wedding (on the A7III on continuous focus) to shoot about 10 groups of people walking up the isle and it missed the...
