Handling and features Performance Verdict Specification The Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM is a slim, compact pancake type lens, which is compatible with Canon EF and EF-S camera bodies and costs around £230.
Excellent sharpness; Low distortion; Compact and lightweight; Fast focusing
No full time manual focus override; Strong vignetting; More than double the price of the 50mm f/1.8 (although performance and build probably justify this
It's impressive what Canon has managed to pack into a very small package here. Excellent results for sharpness, CA and distortion, and only some corner shading when used wide open on full-frame - which you could call the "character" of this lens. For the price, it's well worth the money.
I didn't buy the nifty fifty due to its somewhat low build quality. So when this lens was announced in the 'cheap enough not to really worry' price bracket, I snapped one up. I think with the EF 40mm pancake, Canon have the balance right. It's not an 'L' lens but does have a metal mount.
The diminutive Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Pancake Lens immediately inspires the high-pitched talking-to-a-baby voice from its first-time viewers, with short drawn-out words and phrases such as "awwwwe" and "it's sooooo cuuute" being especially common.
Fantastic lens for the price and weight.
The Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM ($199.99 direct) lens is one of the smallest you'll find for Canon cameras . Its pancake design barely juts out from a camera when mounted. It can be used on full-frame and APS-C D-SLRs, and provides smooth autofocus for video recording when paired with the EOS Rebel T4i...
Extremely compact; Very sharp; Minimal distortion; Inexpensive; STM focus motor
Focus-by-wire design; Modest f/2.8 aperture
I love this lens. I prefer to use prime lenses over zoom lenses and I bought this lens to replace the "nifty fifty" that was recommended to me when I bought the camera body. This lens is a much higher quality and takes better images. The auto focus mechanism is also a lot more responsive.
High quality construction; compact size; amazing price

Canon's new standard fixed 40mm lens is so slim and light (just under 3cm protruding from camera body to lens cap edge and weighing 130g) it can slip into a gear bag or pocket with little bother.
Versatile; small and light; Sharp images; Silent autofocus in video mode on 650D and 5D Mark III
Auto/manual focus switch a little fiddly; Quiet autofocus feature only with the above models
