Great Lens for the price

This lens was a replacement for my kit lens. I'm more than happy with the lower apeture, and achieving a great balance for both indooor and out.

The lens is light, quiet, and is sharp; Very good lens for the price

Auto focus is a bit slow

The best lens for Rebel cameras.

This is the best glass aside from the 10-22mm you can get for your Rebel. I have been able to borrow a friends lens and the clarity of the photos you will get from this far outweigh the cost.

daily walk around lens; portraits

Canon EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 IS USM: Worth It

All in all this is the best sub-L lens (pro level) canon lens in the 'normal' zoom range and worth

Great images; reliable quality and ergonomic

EF-S mount; Small focus ring

Fantastic lens IF you get a good one.

Had to send it back as the focusing was too un reliable. The IQ is really good, and the lens is worth the moment, but only if you get a good copy. Ive had 3 bad ones.

A great walk-around lens

I have been debating for a long time whether I should go for EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS or EF 24-70 f2.8L. The EF-S 17-85 is a big no-no because of its poor optical performance. My major concern on 17-55 is that it only fits EF-S mount cameras, which means it will have to go when I upgrade to a full-frame...

Great optical performance (comparable to L series); wide open at f2.8 for background blur; IS is a huge plus

Price is too high; no lens hood included; zoom barrel not smooth enough; construction not as good as L series; fit only EF-S mount cameras

"Nearly one 'L' of a lens"

Having owned and used a Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM zoom lens for around 15 months, I feel that I have some well balanced experience with it. Being an EF-S lens (the 'S' standing for 'Short' back-focus), it is designed for use ONLY with cameras having APS-C size sensors.

Useful range; Fast f/2.8 aperture; Great IS; Superb image quality

Lens hood costs extra

All zoom lenses have drawbacks. However, according to many reviews this is a fantastic lens especially when you consider what is available for the EF-S lenses---those lenses for Canon cameras that have a 1.6 crop factor such as the Rebel, 20D and 30D.

Kit lens replacement

Heavier than the kit lens but the 17-55mm f/2.8, is one of the best (if not the best) low-light walk-around lenses you can buy. Its 17-55mm focal length range makes it versatile for use in either landscape or portrait photography. It may be pricey, but it's worth every last paise you pay for it.

Love this lens!

I purchased this lens to use with my 40D. It is the only lens I have right now. I did a lot of research before purchasing it as the price tag was rather steep. I can honestly say I have no regrets. This lens, due its wide angle and zoom, is a great all purpose lens.

I/S; durable; excellent for low light shots

heavy; pricy; lens hood not included

This is the one many Canon dSLR owners have been waiting for... a versatile wide to mid-range zoom with great low light capability due to the wide aperature of 2.8. Add to this IS and USM, and this is a winning package.
