This is a very good lens. The UD (ultra dense glass) element helps to correct colours and it is quite sharp. The aperture at f/2.8 is wonderful. It is pretty sharp wide open, and typically great around f/8-11 (though most lenses are) It has IS which is not all that necessary at this kind of range as...
It is a great general purpose lens for every day photography ,fast focus ,great picture details with low light capability . With lens hood it it has a wow factor ! But some how EF 50mm f/1.4 usm is more practical and easy to use if wide angle is not your need of the hour !
I have used this lens for about five months now and shot several hundred pictures with it. It's used only on a 30D body. Some people have noticed barrel distortion and some pincushion issues with their lenses.
Build quality; Fast maximum aperture; which takes advantage of the finer 30D autofocus capabilities associated with f2.8 and faster lenses; Superior picture quality
Wish the short focal length was 15mm; Not dust sealed like the L lenses; Fits only digital Rebel; Rebel XT; Rebel XTi; 20D; 30D; and probably the upcoming 40D (or whatever they call it); Attracts a lot of attention; especially with the hood attached; Lens hood doesn't come with lens; is expensive (I...
A quality modern mid range zoom for 1.6x crop with all the bells and whistles, constant F2.8, IS & USM. A bit soft at wide end at 2.8 which becomes sharper at f4. Like to see this lens upgraded to L quality for around the same price. Shoots good images but so does the 17-85 at f4.
Good images; IS; mid range zoom
Little Soft wide @2.8

Great lens with fast aperture and I.S! Use this lens for video work with C200 and C300mkii cameras. It's super sharp, light weight and a good zoom range for run and gun filming. Obviously not built as strong as an L series.... But at this price point you can't go wrong with this lens.
This digital-only, 27-88mm equivalent ($1,000, street) is a pro-caliber upgrade of Canon's popular 17-85mm amateur Image Stabilizer lens ($515, street). It has the hallmarks of Canon's professional, full-frame L-series (solid construction, aspheric elements, UD glass).
Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM was announced in early 2006. The lens is designed to fit APS-C type cameras and has a reduced imaging circle with protruding back element which would cause mirror clearance issues if used on a full-frame camera.
The Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens, with a fast, fixed f/2.8 aperture, very high image quality , 3-stop Image Stabilization and a very popular focal length range, is one of the best general purpose lenses available .
