Garmin's Vivoactive HR is more hardcore than Fitbit's Surge

Garmin makes over 25 different fitness wearables that range from $99 to as high as $699. You can say this for Garmin-confusing as that lineup can be, the company has made a device for everyone .

Chroma display is easy to read in sunlight; Can track multiple sports and activities; including swimming; skiing; and stand-up paddle-boarding; Built-in heart rate monitor is always-on and doesn't suck up a lot of battery life; Built-in GPS is super-fast and seamless to use

Garmin Connect has a lot of information and options which can make navigating it and completing simply tasks confusing; App takes a long time to start producing personal insights; The Vivoactive HR could get lost in the shuffle amidst all the other devices competing at this price point

Garmin Vivoactive HR

The Garmin Vivoactive HR ($249.99) is an upgraded version of the Garmin Vivoactive , one of our favorite fitness trackers . As you might be able to tell from the name, the biggest new feature is a continuous heart rate monitor.

Accurate heart rate monitoring; GPS; Waterproof; App store with widgets; Above average battery life

Dim screen could be sharper; Thick, uncomfortable design; Cumbersome to swap bands

Garmin vivoactive HR Review: All-Purpose Performer

When the most popular fitness trackers sell for around $120, you have to make a pretty compelling device if you want to sell it for twice that. Fortunately, the Garmin vivoactive HR ($249) lives up to its price.

Tracks a wide range of activities; Good battery life; Screen is readable in daylight; Customizable interface; Tracks wide range of activities

A little bulky; Inaccurate sleep tracking

Garmin Vivoactive HR Review

The Garmin Vivoactive HR ($249.99) is an upgraded version of the Garmin Vivoactive, one of our favorite fitness trackers. As you might be able to tell from the name, the biggest new feature is a continuous heart rate monitor. Otherwise, it retains many of the same features as its predecessor, including built-in GPS to record outdoor runs, sleep tracking, on-screen weather reports, and vibrating push notifications from your smartphone. But a few design changes, including a bulky form factor and a dim display, hold back what would have otherwise been a solid upgrade. Design and DisplayThe Garmin Vivoactive HR is thicker and heavier than its predecessor. Made of black plastic, the tracker's face measures 1.19 by 2.24 by 0.45 inches (HWD) and weighs 1.67 ounces. The original Vivoactive measures 1.72 by 1.52 by 0.32 inches and weighs 1.34 ounces, making it significantly more comfortable on the wrist. The plastic watch face is flat and rigid, and I never forgot I was wearing it. Two co...

The Garmin Vivoactive HR adds a heart rate monitor, but also changes some of what we loved about the original Vivoactive fitness tracker.

Accurate heart rate monitoring; GPS; Waterproof; App store with widgets; Above average battery life

Dim screen could be sharper; Thick, uncomfortable design; Cumbersome to swap bands

Garmin Vivoactive HR review: Multi-sports master, just not much of a looker

If you're a general fitness fan rather than someone with a specialist hobby, deciding which wearable is right for you is tough. What sport do you prioritise? Are your morning runs more important to you than your weekend round of golf, or would you rather track your commute-based cycles or your...

Solid all-round sports tracking; impressive battery life; stable GPS; accurate heart rate sensor

Slightly stiff and boxy design; dull screen; lack of in-app coaching

I am a swimmer and this watch is awesome!

I have tried the vivofit and vivo and both were good for walking and steps etc but never tracked my swimming. This will track my swimming and keep my steps separate. It also has a band that is more secure than the other vivo and that is how I lost my last one - the snaps came loose and I didn't feel...

love it

Really pleased with this watch, syncs easily with my Samsung phone & very easy to use features. I use it constantly but only need to charge around once a week, would definitely recommend.

Garmin Vivoactive HR hands-on review

We are really, really impressed by this smartwatch. It offers a huge array of features in a compact, comfortable and practical package that will meet the needs of most athletes, whether amateur or professional. And for just over £200, we think it's a bit of a bargain, particularly when you consider that it offers GPS, notifications and an app store for adding yet more tools and features when you need them.

Garmin vivoactive GPS Watch

Do you like to be active away from the course as well? The vivoactive watch will help you there, too. This product includes tracking for running, biking, walking, swimming, and more. Also, it can pair up with your smart phone to give you alerts when you have a call, text, email, etc.

Garmin Vivoactive smartwatch review

For me, Garmin's Edge remains a delight but while the Vivoactive hasn't won me over, it's an affordable and attractive option for swimmers, runners and golfers. There are better 'general' activity trackers, and it's a shame that Garmin didn't integrate a heart-rate monitor.
