Xbox One X review: Still the most powerful console

This review was last updated by Digital Trends contributor Cody Perez on 5/15/2020. When Microsoft unveiled the Xbox One X, an upgraded version of the Xbox One with an intimidating $500 price tag, it claimed the new hardware would be “the most powerful console ever made.” Years later, with the console in hand, we can confirm that the Xbox One X makes good on that promise. Well, at least until the Xbox Series X comes out later this year, that is. However, power on its own doesn’t always translate to improvements. Both loyal Xbox fans and potential PS4-owning converts are itching to know – does the most powerful Xbox truly improve games new and old? Short answer? It does. Every game we’ve played, whether it received an “Xbox One X Enhanced” patch or not, delivered a noticeable performance boost over the Xbox One and Xbox One S. It does this regardless of your setup — though the gain is most noticeable if you have a 4K HDR10 TV. While games look and run better, though, the differences are...

Improves performance for all games; Xbox One X Enhanced games look and run amazing; 4K UHD Blu-Ray player; Sleek design; Very easy to use;

4K recording options are limited; Timeliness of Xbox One Enhanced patches is unclear; Performance improvements can be unpredictable in non-Enhanced games;

Xbox One X review: The most powerful console available today

The Xbox One X is by far and away the most capable 4K games console currently around. Yes, it will no longer be the most powerful console around soon, but its latest price point likely means it will present a significantly cheaper option to get native 4K HDR games onto your shiny new TV.

Super speedy; Packed with power and potential; Native 4K gaming at 60fps; Great 4K Blu-ray player; Dolby Atmos support;

It does still sit in the shadow of the looming Xbox Series X;

Never owned a PS so I can't compare. Last console I owned was a Super Nintendo (wife had an XBOX 360 when we met that was rarely hooked up), so my first foray into current-gen consoles. Ex PC player mostly, though haven't played games much since before we had kids.

Console hardware is a 5 star beast - even if I think the GUI is sluggish and clustered. Fallout 76 is not worth bundling a console with.
