A lot of mixed reviews out there. I having nothing bad to say about this lens. Opposite in fact. It is sharper across the frame than the 17-35 with less vignetting (almost nil), better contrast and 16 is nice to have on the wide end. The VR is very useful on a wide angle lens.

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 16-35mm F4G ED VR Lens AF-S 16-35MM F4GEDVR review

The 16-35mm ƒ/4G VR is an impressive design, providing excellent results for sharpness at its wider angles. It's evident that the optics of this lens are quite complex, to deliver high sharpness across the frame with only moderate chromatic aberration and vignetting and at a relatively affordable...

Nikon's AF-S Nikkor 16-35mm f/4G ED VR Zoom; Ultra-Wide For FX, Moderate Wide For DX Nikon D-SLRs

When you talk about lenses these days you always have to bring in the multiplication factor, especially when you have a lens that fits comfortably on both so-called full-frame and APS-C sensor cameras.

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 16-35mm 1:4G ED VR review

Nikon's 16-35mm F4 VR is the first true wide zoom to sport optical stabilization, but thankfully doesn't compromise imaging performance to do so. It's an excellent choice particularly for full frame users, but you do need to be aware of its pronounced barrel distortion at wide angle.

Users of full frame Nikon SLRs looking for a wideangle zoom that's less expensive and more portable than the existing F2.8 options.;

Architecture and interiors (due to distortion at 16mm), DX users (due to limited range);

Nikon AF-S 16-35mm f/4G ED VR Review

The most obvious thing about this lens, however, is its quietness: it really is virtually silent in AF mode. It is also very quick and focuses both accurately and reliably. Manual intervention can be used in AF mode but there was no occasion when it was needed during testing.
