Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G DX VR AF-P Nikkor

After having bought the outstanding AF-P 70-300mm DX VR lens, I thought I would try this AF-P 18-55mm because of the many great reviews. I have the original AF-S 18-55mm VR (not VRII) released in 2006 as the kit lens for my D3100, so I thought I would get this new AF-P lens for my D5600 as an...

Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G DX VR AF-P Review

The Nikon 18-55mm AF-P VR costs around $250, for which you get solid performance. If you can grab a good set (with D3400 or D5600 or even with D7500) where you usually pay only some $100-150 USD on top of the body-alone price tag, the price / performance ratio gets even better.

New Nikon AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR Lens Black review

I purchased this lens to use as a light and cheap alternative to my other glasses when I work in the forest. It works perfectly on my D 7200 after a small micro focus adjustment. At 18 mm one needs to close the aparture with two stops or so to get good sharpness in the corners of the frame.

Good sharpness overall, especially at 55 mm; Close minimal focusing distance; Very compact and light; VR works fine; Focus is quiet, fast and accurate.

Some purple and yellow chromatic aberrations in the corners of the frame No VR switch on/off button on the lens tube; All plastic; High distortion at 18 mm

Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR Review

The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR ($199.95 direct)($199.95 at Amazon) is the standard kit lens for APS-C Nikon D-SLR cameras. Buying it along with a body halves your out of pocket costs to acquire the lens, but owners of older Nikon D-SLRs bundled with its non-stabilized predecessor may consider it as an upgrade. It produces a field of view that is roughly equivalent to 27-83mm in terms of full-frame photography. The lens is light at 9.3 ounces and measures just 3.1 by 2.9 inches (HD). It accepts 52mm filters, but the front element does rotate when focus is adjusted, so using a rotating circular polarizing filter can be tricky. Nikon keeps the weight down by using a plastic mount, rather than the more common metal variety, which is more prone to wear and tear over the years. There's an internal focus motor, which is speeider than older screw-drive systems, but because the front element rotates during focus it can be a bit noisy. A bayonet lens hood is available to re...

Inexpensive. Optically stabilized. Light. Quite sharp. Useful zoom range.
