Nikon has no less than three 35mm prime lenses in its lens range and as well as the f/1.8 model we're testing, there's the older 35mm f/2D AF and the professional 35mm f/1.4G AF-S which costs a fraction under £1390.

Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 35mm f1.8G

Most people new to SLR photography will choose a zoom lens or a telephoto as their first lens, but there's a lot to be said about prime lenses - crisp and sharp images, depth of field effects, and portability.

Small and compact prime lens; ideal for beginners; Includes AF motor for entry-level cameras; Excellent bokeh and sharpness

Chromatic aberration present at wide apertures; Noticeable barrel distortion

Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 35mm f1.8G

If you bought an SLR before the Nineties it wouldn't have come with a kit zoom, but a ‘standard' lens of around 50mm with a fast maximum aperture of f1.8 or thereabouts instead.

Not what I ordered

I have had my camera for about a year and just really got the hang of playing with it and just realized that I was sent a 50mm lens instead of a 35mm. While I love the lens, I am disappointed in myself for not being knowledgeable enough to catch this at the beginning and frustrated because now I...

Great lens. Great price

I have both this lens and the 50mm. Not sure which on i like better. Great on fx but also works well on dx cameras. Sharp, fast and the bokeh is not too bad at all. The only knock is some tricky distortion. Most can be fix in lightroom.

Outstanding Lens!

I use this lens mostly for portrait, modeling, wedding and live performances in low lit places. For the price it's an incrediable lens. My sister is into photography and she's dying to get one her self. It has definately uped my game and made me realise just what a difference a fast lens can make.

Super Sharp Lens!

I was in the market for a fast lens mainly to be used for indoor events (kids birthday parties, Christmas, etc...). It was between this lens and the 50mm 1.8. I chose this lens becuase i felt that the 50mm would be to much zoom for indoors shooting. I definitely made a great choice.

Fast; sharp; affordable lens

Nothing so far
