Nice one - Auto focus is not perfect

You will have to switch to manual autofocus mode many times. However, no defects with the lenses and I'm enjoying the photography with this one..

This lens is a bargain! It lets you take great pictures and it's nice and light -- that's the plus side of it's mostly plastic construction. The downside is that you need to be careful with it. Treat it well and it will last for years though.

I love this lens. It's one of the available kit lenses for the D5000 I bought recently. It's light weight and produces some extremely crisp results. The zoom action is very smooth and the VR feature works quite well in low light, allowing hand-held images to be taken where a tripod would have to be...

Great lens for the money

I recently purchased this lens and have nothing but praise for it. Sure it won't match up to a $2000 zoom lens if you are pixel peeping but at this price it gives outstanding results and is lightweight and easy to use. Focussing is fast and quiet and the VR feature helps prevent shaky shots.

A good budget lens

This lens does not offer as long of a zoom range as the 18-200mm lens, but is much less expensive and produces sharp images. It also includes vibration reduction (image stabilization) technology for reducing camera "shake". This lens is compact and lightweight, making it a great choice for travel.

Never worked from the get go!

After much research I bought my first digital SLR camera, a Nikon D5200. To extend the camera's use I bought this refurbished model zoom lens based on its positive reviews. While using the lens it whirled and whined and would fail to focus but for the fewest times in bright light.

solid, compact package

I got this lens as part of a package along with a 18-105mm lens. I'm finding that I tend to use the 18-105 a lot more. The 55-200 gives a bit more zoom but to keep it light it is quite a bit smaller. Still seems like a good lens and the package made it a great deal.

Easily Interchangeable; Fast / accurate auto-focus

Limited range; No Macro

Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED VR DX AF-S Nikkor review by Glutte

Sharpness is not that bad,nor is contrast or even color at f/8-f/11. But I never liked pictures taken with this lens so after awhile I replaced it. I don't have the money to invest in pro zoom so instead I bought: - Nikon 50mm 1.8 ai-s 50$ - Nikon 105mm 2.5 ai 130$ - Nikon 180mm 2.8 ai-s ED 200$...

Price; moderately sharp and contrasty

Build; pictures lackluster

Nikon AF-S DX VR 55-200mm f4-5.6 G IF-ED

You don't always need a top-flight telephoto lens. It all depends on what kind of photographer you are and the subjects you prefer. You may find that the vast majority of the shots you take are with the standard ‘kit' zoom and that you only rarely need anything longer.
