Great lens for the money

I recently purchased this lens and have nothing but praise for it. Sure it won't match up to a $2000 zoom lens if you are pixel peeping but at this price it gives outstanding results and is lightweight and easy to use. Focussing is fast and quiet and the VR feature helps prevent shaky shots.

Fair lens, but workable

There's not much you can say about this lens that doesn't seem unfair considering it's typical 175 d

If this is what you can afford..

Cheap; rotating front; not that sharp

I get to know a lens, zoom or prime, after about a few thousand images through it. After about 3k's of shooting, this lens has come on to be a favourite companion for urban and candid shooting.

The images produced are almost as convincing as a higher end expensive lens; Small for a powerfull zoom; Lightweight and stealth friendly; My favourite for urban journalism; VR lets me shoot in low light like never before; Bargain cost

The main reason for the Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6 AF-S VR DX is the addition of the VR technology, and the first thing that strikes you about this lens is the light weight. At a meagre 355g, its really some achievement to get all it offers into such a small lens.

AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED Lens

Handling The review lens was a comfortable fit on the D5000 body we used for our tests and the combined camera-plus-lens felt reasonably well balanced - although we feel a slightly heavier lens would be more stable at focal length settings beyond 100mm.

You want a lightweight telephoto zoom lens for Nikon's entry-level DSLR bodies; You require performance levels to match the standard of Nikon's entry and lower mid-level DSLRs

You require fast autofocusing in low light levels (this isn't a lens for shooting indoor sports); You need close focusing capabilities

Nikkor AF-S 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED DX VR - Review / Test Report

The build quality is actually pretty good and a clear step up from the older AF-S 55-200mm non-VR. That said it is still a consumer grade lens with a plastic body (down to the lens mount). The very broad rubberized zoom ring feels reasonably smooth.
