REVIEW: Samyang 50mm f/1.4 AS UMC Lens Review

This manual focus standard lens, offers a fast f/1.4 maximum aperture for a price of around £379, which is a little surprising, as Samyang lenses are traditionally pitched in at the budget end of the market.

Great quality, smooth focus ring, excellent value for money

Love this lens! I own a video production company and prior to this had the Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM and hated it. Pulling focus with a STM lens is the most terrible thing you can try to do. Pulling focus with this is super smooth and since it is longer as well it is very precise.

Decent sharpness; especially when stopped down; Smooth manual focus action; Good build; Low CA

Performance from this lens is on a par with manufacturers own lenses; but nothing special; Pronounced falloff at f/1.4; Seems like poor value for money at current price; Lower contrast than other modern lenses

Samyang 50 mm f/1.4 AS UMC

The photographic version of that lens have recently found its way to our editorial office so now we can present its full test. We would like to thank the distributor of Samyang in Poland, Next77 company, for lending us one specimen of that lens for testing purposes.

very good image quality in the frame centre; sensibly corrected chromatic aberration; slight coma in the corners of the APS-C/DX; low astigmatism

image quality near the maximum relative aperture could have been better; too high distortion; unacceptable performance against bright light; noticeable vignetting

As usual, top optical quality from Samyang. I own the 12mm, 35mm, 50mm & 85mm and can say that I like them much better than my Canon 135mm f2 or 16-35 f4. None of the Samyang lenses have autofocus, and to me this is an advantage as it makes me a better photographer.

Samyang 50 mm f/1.4 AS UMC Lens for Nikon - Brand New review

The Samyang 50mm T/1.5 AS UMC (Samyang 50mm f/1.4 AS UMC) didn't really thrill us although it is far from being a bad lens. Its optical qualities simply don't stand out enough to make a difference compared to other 50mm lenses. That being said - the image center is quite sharp at max.

Samyang 50 mm f/1.4 AS UMC Lens for Nikon - Brand New review

The Apple iPhone 14 isn’t a huge upgrade on the iPhone 13, yet it still is a great phone with a top camera, good battery life and all the iOS benefits.

Clever safety features, Very good battery life, Reliable camera, Fun colours, You’ve got an ageing iPhone: If you’re on an iPhone 11 or older, then the changes here will make a notable difference.

Stuck on a 60Hz display, Minimal differences to the iPhone 13, You’ve got an iPhone 13: The changes from Apple’s previous phone aren’t enough to warrant an upgrade this year.

Samyang 50 mm f/1.4 AS UMC Lens for Nikon - Brand New review

The Apple iPhone 14 is no match for the just-released iPhone 14 Pro, but if you ignore that, it’s one of the most effective phones around.

Great cameras, front and back, Fast performance, Good battery life, Innovative safety features

Design too familiar, Some average features
