Sony ZV-1

The Sony ZV-1 is one of the best vlogger cameras on the market. It's compact, easy-to-use and feature packed.

Immaculate images

Any decent vlogger needs better than decent images and the Sony ZV-1 Vlog Camera really delivers in this department. That's thanks to a 20.1MP 1.0-type Exmor RS CMOS image sensor, wide-aperture lens, and a BIONZ X image processing engine for highly detailed images. To prove you're no amateur, you can achieve professional background bokeh in low-light environments.

A smooth operator

Thanks to AI technology, the Sony ZV-1's auto focus sticks to your face when you need it, but the Fast Hybrid AF system lets you quickly focus on another subject, allowing for a smooth transition that is the mark of the more professional vlogger.

Anywhere, any conditions

Thanks to outstanding image stabilisation, the ZV-1 allows for smooth footage while you're on the move. Meanwhile, with automatic exposure you can easily adapt to lighting changes and keep the images looking sharp and bright.

The sound is as good as the footage

Audio quality is just as important as video when it comes to vlogging and the Sony ZV-1 is brilliant in this department as well. It comes with a directional 3-capsule microphone and a wind screen which gives you optimum sound no matter where you're recording.

Share your footage with ease

What's the point of being a vlogger if the rest of the world can't see what you've recorded? Thanks to a quick download of the Imaging Edge mobile app, the Sony ZV-1 Camera lets you easily transfer images to your compatible smartphone, edit them, and upload to your social channels of choice.

Sony ZV-1 Digital Camera ZV1 review

Sony's latest camera is nimble, lightweight and powerful. With its advanced processing capabilities, fast auto focus and real-time tracking combined with the impressively clear audio capture and the useful flip-out screen, it really is a great option for vloggers.

180-degree flip-out screen; Video processing is impressive; Fast autofocus and real-time tracking; Great sound recording potential

Battery life could be better; No viewfinder; Battery/SD card door is inconvenient for tripod use; Short zoom range

Sony ZV-1 Digital Camera ZV1 review

The Sony ZV-1 is the best compact vlogging camera you can buy. Its mix of a bright lens, superb autofocus and design tweaks like the side-flipping screen make it a powerful pocket video option with few peers.

Class-leading autofocus; Bright lens for lovely video bokeh; Hotshoe and 3.5mm mic port; Side-flipping screen ideal for video; Fits in your pocket

Average video stabilization; Touchscreen still very limited; Micro USB rather than USB-C

Sony ZV-1 Digital Camera ZV1 review

Some might dismiss the ZV-1 as yet another Sony RX100 variant, but it’s much more than that. The sensor and lens might be familiar, but the body, the controls, the audio and the rear screen are all new and different and optimised brilliantly for vlogging.

Vari-angle rear screen; Clip on wind shield; Brilliantly fast AF

Minimum focus distance changes with zoom; Stabilization seems pretty jerky; Why a 3:2 screen and not 16:9?

Sony ZV-1 Digital Camera ZV1 review

The Sony ZV-1 is a compact camera aimed at vloggers and video creators, while also delivering decent photo capabilities. It inherits the 20 Megapixel 1in sensor, confident phase-detect autofocus, 4k video up to 30p, and 24-70mm f1.8-2.8 zoom of the RX100 V(A), but features a number of upgrades to...

Sony ZV-1 review

The Sony ZV-1’s articulating screen really does set it apart from its main rival, the Canon G7 X Mk III. It feels robust, and the fact opening the screen out powers the camera from cold is a neat little time-saving party trick. Footage captured on the vlog-star also looks exactly how we want it to in middling to good light. The included ND filter is a saving grace in sunlight, and the only out-of-bounds environment for video capture is low-low-light. Naturally, with the same guts as the excellent RX-100, the ZV-1 is a stills-star as well as a filmstar, with its images looking rich, and in-focus thanks to its smart eye-tracking. You won’t get the shallow depth of field a DSLR delivers, but for a compact, the ZV-1 is still exceptional. A great camera at a stomachable price, given everything it does.
