The Canon EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM ($599.99) may be a budget lens when compared with the company's line of L lenses that are often paired with full-frame Canon cameras, but it's a quality zoom nonetheless. It doesn't offer fixed wide aperture of the go-to lens of many a pro, the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II ($1,899.00 at Amazon) , but it includes image stabilization, betters its zoom range, and is quite compact given its range of coverage. It's a solid alternative for photographers looking for a lighter, less expensive lens for a full-frame body, but it does show some distortion throughout its zoom range. The 24-105mm ($599.00 at Adorama)  measures 4.1 by 3.3 inches (HD), weighs about 1.2 pounds, and uses 77mm from filters. It's noticeably lighter than the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM ($1,149) zoom (4.2 by 3.2 inches, 1.5 pounds), but it omits the weatherproofing that you get when you buy an L series lens. Full frame cameras have become much more affordable over the past couple of years, with models such as the Canon 6D now costing just ￡1200, and at last there's a lens to match in the form of the Canon 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM.

The real world experience is I could not tell the difference in a photo taken by this lens and the 24-105L, even wide open. Objectif acheté en février 2016 pour équiper un Eos 6D. Plus léger (et moins cher) que le 25 105 f4 L IS USM, il donne de très bons résultats. Un peu court en basse lumière, il reste utilisable sans souci en poussant à 6400 voire 12800 ISO (le 6D est impeccable à 6400 et encore très bon à 12800).

I bought this because I wanted a lens in this range and couldn't afford the L lens. I've been thrilled with it. Focus is quick and accurate. Images are sharp and crisp. It's now got about 10,000 shots on it and it's still as responsive and crisp as it was the first day.

Great image quality; fast focus; reasonable price

Some CA above about 90mm but it's minor enough that you have to go looking for it, as a rule; I've only noticed it on an item that had black and white checks, and one side of the black checks had small purple fringing; I didn't notice it until I was looking at the image full size on my computer

This lens is not to be confused with the 24 -105 f/4 'L' lens, which costs about twice as much. The STM lens has a smaller aperture at the longer focal length (f/5.6 compared with f/4 for the 'L' lens) which makes it not so good for action photography where a fast shutter speed is required.
