With a price point of $2,000, the Nikon 28mm f/1.4E is unquestionably a luxury lens, but its combination of bright aperture and wide-angle focal length can lead to some unique images.
The Nikkor AF-S 28 mm f/1.4E ED, launched on 31 May 2017, is that family's newest child. It is also optically the most complex device in the group, with two elements more than in the 1.4/24 model, allegedly more difficult to manufacture and correct properly.
Solid casing; Sensational image quality in the frame centre; Very good image quality on the edge of APS-C/DX sensor; Sensible image quality on the edge of full frame; Negligible lateral chromatic aberration; Imperceptible spherical aberration; Lack of distortion problems; Moderate astigmatism; Not...
Slow autofocus; A bit too high level of longitudinal chromatic aberration; Noticeable coma; Huge vignetting on full frame
Announced in May 2017, the AF-S Nikkor 28mm f/1.4E ED is Nikon's latest FX full-frame wide-angle lens to offer a fast maximum aperture of f/1.4, slotting in between the existing 24mm and 35mm f/1.4 lenses.
This large, chunky lens brings a bright f/1.4 aperture and a usefully wide angle 28mm together in an impressive looking combination. 28mm has long been a classic wide angle focal length, wide enough to satisfy those seeking the look this gives and yet not so wide as to start to introduce undue...
First, this lens is not cheap. I initially laughed at the idea that anyone would spend so much on a 28mm prime. Later, after looking through my Lightroom metadata I realized that I used my 28mm 1.8G lens more than any other. I also learned that I used my 24 - 70mm 2.8G lens even less.
The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 28mm f/1.4E ED is a solid performer, aimed at 28mm fans who demand f/1.4 glass. It's expensive, and doesn't deliver the perfect edge-to-edge performance that you get with some other modern glass.
Bright f/1.4 maximum aperture; Extremely sharp when stopped down; Just a little distortion; Fluorine lens coating
Expensive; Strong vignette and soft edges at wide apertures; 11-inch close focus can be limiting
Nikon's line of f/1.4 prime lenses has a new addition, the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 28mm f/1.4E ED ($1,999.95). The premium wide-angle lens has a very bright aperture, top-end construction, and snappy autofocus. But you pay a lot for it, especially when compared with the $700 AF-S Nikkor 28mm f/1.8G, a compact lens that's only a half-stop dimmer. If you're set on an f/1.4 lens, also consider the Sigma 24mm F1.4 DG HSM Art, which is a little bit wider, but deadly sharp in its own right and less than half the price of the 28mm f/1.4E ED. Design The 28mm ($1,796.95 at Amazon) is big for a prime lens, measuring 3.9 by 3.3 inches (HD). It tips the scales at 1.4 pounds and supports 77mm front filters. It's much larger than the 28mm f/1.8G, which is 3.2 by 2.9 inches, 11.6 ounces, and supports 67mm front filters. A reversible lens hood, front and rear caps, and a soft carrying case are included. The lens carries a premium price, but is backed by Nikon's top-tier build quality. That means it's ...
The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 28mm f/1.4E ED is an ultra-wide aperture, wide-angle lens for Nikon SLRs. It can capture great-looking images, but is priced very high.
Bright f/1.4 maximum aperture; Extremely sharp when stopped down; Just a little distortion; Fluorine lens coating
Expensive; Strong vignette and soft edges at wide apertures; 11-inch close focus can be limiting
I had an excellent experience with this Nikon. It gave an extra feel for the photographers while catching. I used it to catch-up best stills
While the slightly unusual focal length is a tad too long for serious landscape work, it offers a wealth of possibilities, from street to portrait or wedding and event photography, allowing you to get close to your subjects, or frame more than a traditional 35mm.
Just love this lens for night time cityscapes . Brilliant pin sharp images on D850.
