Having long since promised myself I'd get a fast prime (with autofocus) after a few years of using a converted Canon FD lens, I was torn between the 25mm f1.7 and the Leica f1.4. I decided that discretion is the better part of my wallet and went with the f1.7 and I have to say it was a great choice.

Pictures are sharp and no more focus hunting.... Working toward movie production and willing to take the extra time learning manual settings to shoot like the pro's. The extra low light capability is another big reason for this lens...

A no-brainer choice. Micro four thirds users will have to look far and wide to find anything that scores so well overall at current prices. OK, the 20mm f1.7 is smaller for those who want pocket-size, pancake glass, but for the rest of us this 25mm earns its keep everytime.

This is a great prime lens for those who don\'t want to spend hugely to gain quality results. Metal mount, smooth manual focusing ring, lightweight and easy to handle. This \'nifty-fifty\' equivalent adds another dimension to your photography; f1.7 to f4 gives stand out results, with f5.6 the real...

Annoying decorative lens ring which needs to be removed before fitting the lens hood provided; Diffraction becomes obvious beyond f11

Panasonic Lumix G 25mm f/1.7 ASPH Review

The Panasonic Lumix G 25mm f/1.7 for Micro Four Thirds is the equivalent of the 50mm f/1.8 or f/1.7 lenses that for decades were considered the standard lenses for 35mm film cameras. Typically these were high quality optics, made in vast numbers so at relatively low cost.

High levels of sharpness; Low distortion; Low CA; Close focusing; Well made

No weather resistance; Flare levels high against the light

Panasonic Lumix G 25mm f/1.7 ASPH

The Panasonic Lumix G 25mm f/1.7 ASPH is a very good standard lens at a very affordable price, making it a must-have purchase if you don't already have a 50mm equivalent lens in your kit-bag. Optically the Panasonic Lumix G 25mm f/1.7 ASPH is an excellent performer.

Panasonic Lumix G 25mm f/1.7 Asph review

Let's first take a look at the alternatives that are already available. Panasonic itself makes the compact Lumix G 20mm f/1.7 II Asph and the faster Leica Summilux DG 25mm f/1.4, but they cost £270 and £380 respectively.

Panasonic Lumix G 25mm f/1.7 Asph review

At first sight, Panasonic's latest lens, the Lumix G 25mm f/1.7 Asph, may look redundant before it's even hit the shops. After all, it's not as if there's a shortage of similar options for Micro Four Thirds. But then you notice the price – just £159 at launch – and it makes sense.
