Philips Hue Motion Sensor Review

You can control your connected lighting by app, from your smartwatch, by voice, and even by a good old-fashioned button, but Philips' latest addition to Hue only cares when you're around.

Easy to set up; Flexible lighting scene options; Long battery life

Only works with Hue ecosystem; Occasional brief lag in response to motion

Philips Hue Motion Sensor Review

Designed for indoor use, the Philips Hue Motion Sensor ($39.99) will turn your Hue smart lights on when it detects motion and turn them off after a specified period of inactivity. This small, battery-powered sensor installs in minutes and lets you control up to three rooms that are illuminated by Hue lighting. You’ll need a Hue Bridge to use it and it can only directly control Hue lights, but you can create routines to have it work with devices that are connected to your Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, or Google Assistant smart home ecosystem, expanding its functionality beyond just light bulbs. Small and Easy to Install The Hue Motion Sensor is a white plastic square that measures 2.1 by 2.1 by 1.1 inches (HWD) and weighs just 0.14 pound. The front holds a round motion sensor lens, an ambient light sensor, and an LED status indicator that blinks orange during setup, blinks green when the sensor has been identified, emits a short orange flash when the battery is low, and emits a long...

An extremely neat and very clever piece of kit

Tiny, well designed and good-looking. Battery-operated, so no need to wire in, can therefore be placed anywhere (even in another room to the light/s you're controlling) and the battery will apparently last a couple of years. Highly-configurable, for both time of day, motion and daylight sensitivity.

needed for your smart home

I have this connected via HomeKit. It's not only able to immediately turn on designated bulbs as soon as motion is detected, but it can also tell me the temperate in the room that this sensor is in. That's very cool!

This works and is a bit sturdier than expected

I used this in a covered patio to turn on the lights for guests that walk up. Also, when the dog goes out at night, this turns on the lights for him. It doubles as a kind of security for anyone or anything walking around the house. LOL.
