Sony FE 28-70mm F3.5-5.6 OSS Review

The Sony FE 28-70mm F3.5-5.6 OSS ($499.99 list)($398.00 at Amazon) is the first zoom lens available for Sony's full-frame mirrorless camera system. It has the same limitations as most kit lenses, including some very noticeable distortion and soft edges at wider apertures. It's a decent starter lens, but if you can forgo a zoom until its February release, the Zeiss Vario-Tessar T* FE 24-70mm F4 ZA OSS ($1,199.99) promises to live up to the image quality of which the Alpha 7 and 7R($999.99 at Amazon) are capable, but its asking price is comparatively high. The lens is on the large size compared to similar kit zoom for APS-C SLRs, but is pretty light. It measures 3.3 by 2.9 inches (HD) and weighs 10.4 ounces. Despite being a little on the large size, it balances well with the A7 and A7R, even without the addition of a vertical shooting grip. A reversible petal lens hood is included and 55mm filters are supported. It does extend a bit when zooming, but only by about a half inch at the...

The Sony FE 28-70mm F3.5-5.6 OSS is the first zoom lens available for Sony's full-frame mirrorless system, but it shows heavy distortion and isn't that sharp at the edges.

Good center sharpness; Optically stabilized design

Lots of distortion at wide and telephoto ends; Soft edges unless stopped down

Sony FE 28-70mm F3.5-5.6 OSS

The Sony FE 28-70mm F3.5-5.6 OSS is a very competent, if unspectacular, standard zoom lens for the Sony A7R/A7 full-frame compact system cameras. It delivers excellent sharpness in the centre of the frame almost throughout its aperture range, even performing well wide-open, although you'll need to...

Sony E 28-70 F3.5-5.6 Lens SEL2870 review

Although overshadowed by its more pricey, and glamorous sibling, the Zeiss 24-70mm f4 OSS , this also stabilized 28-70mm f3.5-5.6 OSS model looks like an attractive option. It’s not quite so wide of course and it’s 1 stop slower at the longer end but it’s 1/3 stop faster at the wide end and it its...

Sony FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS SEL2870 review by nippa

Given reviews that I'd read I thought that I'd be changing this for the Zeiss equivalent but not so. At its worst setting at 70mm the edges are soft wide open but stopped down to F8 all is well again. Perhaps the best kit lens I've seen since the LUMIX 14-45.

Light stabilised and sealed with good resolution and nice bokeh

High quality plastic

I have both Zeiss FE 35 and Zeiss FE 55. This lens is no Zeiss. You can't shake the feeling that you are working with a cheap plastic toy. With this said, if you work within its limitations, it is a more than a reasonable carry around zoom.

Light; decent image quality @24mm; OSS; weather sealed

Feels cheap; tele-photo end very slow (F5.6

Seems like a VERY nice boy

So far I love it. It appears sharp though rather large sitting on my Sony A6000. It gives 42.5mm to 105 (full frame equivalent) on my dslr equivalent Sony, which is a handy range for many occasions. It has stabilisation also. Overall, quite pleased so far.

A very good performer

Personally I enjoy using this kit lens - out there, in real life, away from charts and all that, the IQ is actually very good for a kit lens and performs very well on the a7m2 and a6000.

The Sony FE kit lens: it's an option that's bundled with the A7 lineup of cameras and will satisfy the needs of the general shooter. In many cases, the will best meet the needs of the A7 and A7r lineup of users if you want better sharpness.
