The Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM lens, like Canon's other pancake lenses, is mostly defined by what it isn't. It isn't super wide-angle or telephoto, it doesn't let you zoom, and it doesn't have a super-wide maximum aperture like most of Canon's most esteemed prime lenses.

The ultra-slim Canon 24mm f/2.8 STM lens is just 22.8mm in depth – barely thicker than the lens cap – and weighs just 125g. Sounds intriguing doesn't it? Couple this with a 24mm focal length and what you have is an extremely versatile and portable pancake lens.

Happy with my purchase. Very good image quality for an under-150 dollar lens.

When comparing this lens to the EF-S 50mm f/1.8, I like this lens a little more on a crop body because it is similar to a traditional 35mm lens [actually 38.88mm for T3i]. It makes it a little more useful in just walk around picture taking. The build quality and STM are also better.

Historically, Canon hasn't been known for making pancake lenses. Just a few years ago it dipped its toes into the water of the ultra-slim prime lens space with the EF 40mm f/2.8 STM for full-frame camera bodies.
