I bought this lens to widen the views possible on my EOS 10D. The build quality is great. It feels like a little tank compared to the 50mm f/1.8. It's only sliiightly larger but nicely heavier than that lens. But, check the weaknesses....

Depth of field is great; The horribly wrong autofocusing is quick, and f/2.8 ain't bad either; Build quality is great; It feels like you could throw it at someone, hurt them, and pick it up and use it again

Here's the main problem: It brutally overexposes everything on my 10D; It's not reliably "x stops off" of you would simply set some exposure compensation whenever you mount it on your camera; It's very hit and miss.

Canon EF 24mm f/2.8 review by Ashley_Pomeroy

I wanted a small, wide autofocus prime lens for my full-frame Canon 5D. I already have a superb 24mm lens - a tiny Olympus 24mm f/2.8 that I use with an OM-EOS adapter - but I find myself running out of patience with manual stop-down and zone focus.

Sharp in the very middle at all apertures; sharp almost to the corners at f/8; small; light; good colour, contrast

Feels redundant - you really have to want it; overpriced; physically old-fashioned

Sharp, cheap, lightweight.

I had to wait 2 months for this lens to arrive. I even tried to cancel the order but it was too late. It arrived. 30hrs later .. I accidentally threw it onto concrete and the front glass had a crack and the barrel filter ring dented and some plastic bit in the front was shattered.

Superior build quality; Super-sharp images

Good value !!!

Love this lens on my 7d . First off I have to do some micro adjustment of -6 to get the full potential of the lens. Its a keeper for sure. CA is tollerabe and can be easily fixed .

Very useful, compact, and fun to use !

This lens is a great compact lens. If you wanted to travel as light as possible, this is a great choice. It is wide enough for scenic shots, and great for street and distorted people shots. I wish this version had an Ultrasonic motor, but for the price, I can live with the buzzy motor.

24mm pancake

Previous reviews are for other Canon 24mm's. The Pancake STM is just now released and got my copy yesterday. Small (same as 40mm), sharp, small and sharp. Perfect for what it is, small and sharp. Disappointing Canon didn't improve small STM motor over the 40mm as it is audible on my SL1.

Sharp; Small

Stm Not Quiet Enough

Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM - Review / Test Report

Back in 2012, Canon introduced the Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM - a full format pancake lens. Pancake lenses have a short barrel in an attempt to minimize the size of the overall setup.

Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM

The Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM is a tiny prime lens that delivers surprisingly good image quality given its inexpensive price-point, making it a great moderate wide-angle addition to a compact, lightweight EOS kit.
