The Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM lens, like Canon's other pancake lenses, is mostly defined by what it isn't. It isn't super wide-angle or telephoto, it doesn't let you zoom, and it doesn't have a super-wide maximum aperture like most of Canon's most esteemed prime lenses.
This lens is a great compact lens. If you wanted to travel as light as possible, this is a great choice. It is wide enough for scenic shots, and great for street and distorted people shots. I wish this version had an Ultrasonic motor, but for the price, I can live with the buzzy motor.
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
Primarily a macro photographer, I wanted to try my hand at wide angle nature photography. The 24mm lens is absolutely fantastic, sharp, durable, and was very easy to get the hang of. Very inexpensive as well! I love the focusing distance- enlarged subject up close with a nice bokeh background.
Previous reviews are for other Canon 24mm's. The Pancake STM is just now released and got my copy yesterday. Small (same as 40mm), sharp, small and sharp. Perfect for what it is, small and sharp. Disappointing Canon didn't improve small STM motor over the 40mm as it is audible on my SL1.
Sharp; Small
Stm Not Quiet Enough
Handling and Features Performance Verdict Specification This compact wide-angle pancake lens for Canon APS-C format digital SLRs features Canon's latest stepping focusing motor technology, which promises, smoother, quieter autofocus performance, which is especially suited to recording video.
Excellent sharpness; Lightweight; Compact; Fast focusing; Good value for money
No hood included as standard
I would recommend this product. It is excellent quality and well worthy of the Canon brand.
Historically, Canon hasn't been known for making pancake lenses. Just a few years ago it dipped its toes into the water of the ultra-slim prime lens space with the EF 40mm f/2.8 STM for full-frame camera bodies.
Quite sharp; Very compact; Classic wide-angle field of view; Silent STM focus motor; Affordable
Lacks image stabilization; Disappointing manual focus experience; Noticeable vignette at f/2.8
When we look at all the new photographic equipment that appears each year, it's easy to get swept along by the big announcements such as super-high resolution cameras and ultra-fast lenses.
