I bought this lens to widen the views possible on my EOS 10D. The build quality is great. It feels like a little tank compared to the 50mm f/1.8. It's only sliiightly larger but nicely heavier than that lens. But, check the weaknesses....
Depth of field is great; The horribly wrong autofocusing is quick, and f/2.8 ain't bad either; Build quality is great; It feels like you could throw it at someone, hurt them, and pick it up and use it again
Here's the main problem: It brutally overexposes everything on my 10D; It's not reliably "x stops off" of you would simply set some exposure compensation whenever you mount it on your camera; It's very hit and miss.
I'm going to say that this lens is pretty good can make some very good lenses the one thing that I was expecting from this lens was more sharpness for middle of the road performance I think it's a good lens but I have a tokina 11-20 which is much sharperso I think can and could have done a better...
I bought this for my new Canon 200d (which I'm hating more with every passing day) after reading many reviews as it was a toss up between this or the 50mm. I went with this for the closer focusing distance and 'macro' capabilities as well as all round versatility.
I was tor between buying the 40mm pancake lens and this, the 24mm pancake. I decided on the 24, since I already have the 50mm 1.8. This lens is amazing! I never thought I would love taking wide angle shots so much, it is such a new experience for me. Very sharp, especially around f5.6.
I bought d lens from local image square shop at a good discount, the build is good if not top notch, but not so cheap feel like the old nifty 50 f1.8. Espcially like d wide angle perspective which on a crop camera has an equivalent of 38.4 mm and the benefit of f/2.8 allowing night time shots with...
When comparing this lens to the EF-S 50mm f/1.8, I like this lens a little more on a crop body because it is similar to a traditional 35mm lens [actually 38.88mm for T3i]. It makes it a little more useful in just walk around picture taking. The build quality and STM are also better.
Overall Value Nice; sharp pictures Much less motor noise than 50mm f/1.8 Small pkg and lightweight Nice walk around lens
Not much room for fingers; but it's a pancake lens; so expected Might only be my example; but interface to T3i camera body seems overly tight; almost to the point I thought I was installing incorrectly
Happy with my purchase. Very good image quality for an under-150 dollar lens.
I recently bought a Canon lens for my DSLR from John Lewis. The price and quality is excellent and the service was second to none. An added bonus is the two year warranty from John Lewis. I shall certainly buy from here again.
