I was tor between buying the 40mm pancake lens and this, the 24mm pancake. I decided on the 24, since I already have the 50mm 1.8. This lens is amazing! I never thought I would love taking wide angle shots so much, it is such a new experience for me. Very sharp, especially around f5.6.

Historically, Canon hasn't been known for making pancake lenses. Just a few years ago it dipped its toes into the water of the ultra-slim prime lens space with the EF 40mm f/2.8 STM for full-frame camera bodies.
Quite sharp; Very compact; Classic wide-angle field of view; Silent STM focus motor; Affordable
Lacks image stabilization; Disappointing manual focus experience; Noticeable vignette at f/2.8
Historically, Canon hasn't been known for making pancake lenses. Just a few years ago it dipped its toes into the water of the ultra-slim prime lens space with the EF 40mm f/2.8 STM ($179.00 at Dell) for full-frame camera bodies. Joining it is the inexpensive Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM ($149.99) lens for APS-C cameras. When paired with a Rebel or another crop-sensor Canon body, its field of view is just a little bit wider than the 40mm on a full-frame body, equivalent to about 38mm. It's quite sharp, even at f/2.8, and while it does show some darkening of corners at its widest aperture, that's a small price to pay for its compact form factor, especially when you consider its price. Anyone buying a Canon SLR should purchase it as a compact supplement to the run-of-the-mill EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM ($149.99 at Amazon) lens that's bundled with most Rebel bodies. It's an easy pick for our Editors' Choice award. The EF-S 24mm ( at Amazon) measures just 0.9 by 2.7 inches (HD), we...
The Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM is the sharp, compact, and inexpensive lens that every Canon shooter should own.

When comparing this lens to the EF-S 50mm f/1.8, I like this lens a little more on a crop body because it is similar to a traditional 35mm lens [actually 38.88mm for T3i]. It makes it a little more useful in just walk around picture taking. The build quality and STM are also better.
Overall Value Nice; sharp pictures Much less motor noise than 50mm f/1.8 Small pkg and lightweight Nice walk around lens
Not much room for fingers; but it's a pancake lens; so expected Might only be my example; but interface to T3i camera body seems overly tight; almost to the point I thought I was installing incorrectly
