I have been thinking about buying this lens for a while now but wasn't sure that the focal length of 24mm on APS-C (38mm full frame equivalent angle of view) was wide enough for me. I would have preferred 22mm (35mm equivalent), but in practice the difference isn't much to worry about.

I purchased the 24mm lens to take pictures (portrait type) of people and other things (usually singular animals or objects), as I wanted the bokeh effect (the blurry background when the object is in perfect focus).

Historically, Canon hasn't been known for making pancake lenses. It's quite sharp, even at f/2.8, and while it does show some darkening of corners at its widest aperture, that's a small price to pay for its compact form factor, especially when you consider its price.
