Olympus M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 40-150mm f2.8 Tele Zoom PRO Lens 40-150F2.8PRO review

Olympus is making a big splash with the new Olympus 40-150mm ƒ/2.8 Pro lens. No longer are professional and enthusiast photographers beholden to their large, heavy DSLR telephoto zooms if they want a tele lens with bright apertures, rugged weather-sealed build quality and compatibility with...

Olympus M.Zuiko ED 40-150mm f2.8 PRO

The Olympus M.Zuiko ED 40-150mm f2.8 PRO ($1,499.99) is a serious lens. It covers a longer telephoto zoom range then the standard pro 70-200mm zooms when paired with a Micro Four Thirds camera, and is incredibly sharp from edge-to-edge throughout the entirety of its range, even at f/2.8.

Edge-to-edge sharpness throughout zoom range; No distortion; Protected from cold, dust, and splashes; Excellent close focus capability; Innovative collapsible hood; Manual focus clutch system; Includes tripod collar

Pricey; Lack of optical stabilization an issue for Panasonic Micro Four Thirds shooters

Olympus M.Zuiko ED 40-150mm f2.8 PRO Review

The Olympus M.Zuiko ED 40-150mm f2.8 PRO ($1,499.99) is a serious lens. It covers a longer telephoto zoom range then the standard pro 70-200mm zooms when paired with a Micro Four Thirds camera, and is incredibly sharp from edge-to-edge throughout the entirety of its range, even at f/2.8. You don't see that type of image quality every day, and there's even a dedicated 1.4x teleconverter available for purchase if you need a longer reach. The 40-150mm lives up to its PRO moniker, running circles around the budget-friendly M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm f4.0-5.6 R ($149.00 at Amazon) in every conceivable way save for size. It's because of this that we're not only bestowing Editors' Choice accolades on this top-end telezoom, but we're going as far to give it a 5-star rating. Those don't come often, but there are a lot of reasons that this lens is deserving. The 40-150mm ($1,349.00 at Amazon)  is huge when compared with other lenses designed for the Micro Four Thirds system, but fairly c...

The Olympus M.Zuiko ED 40-150mm f2.8 PRO is the perfect telezoom for Olympus Micro Four Thirds shooters, even though Panasonic owners will be turned off by its lack of in-lens stabilization.

Edge-to-edge sharpness throughout zoom range; No distortion; Protected from cold, dust, and splashes; Excellent close focus capability; Innovative collapsible hood; Manual focus clutch system; Includes tripod collar

Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm f/2.8 PRO Lens Review

Handling and Features Performance Verdict Specification This telephoto zoom lens for Micro Four Thirds (MFT) system cameras provides an angle of view equivalent to an 80-300mm lens used on a 35mm format camera and sports a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture throughout the zoom range.

Excellent sharpness; especially when stopped down a little; Relatively compact and lightweight; Robust build; Dust and splash proof; Quick access for manual focus; Good value; Fast focusing

Manual focus control easily nudged; May be a little large for many MFT bodies; Sharpness could be better towards the edges of the frame at 40mm

Field tested this lens photographing sea otters. Took 700 frames with this lens and the OM-D E-M!. Took 700 frames with the Nikon D810 and the new Nikkor 80-400 mm VR II. Could not see and difference between the two set ups in terms of image sharpness, overall image quality, or single shot autofocus...

Super sharp and lightweight

The OM-D E-M1 body does not year support continuous autofocus

Superb

"I've own many micro four thrids lenses since adopting the system. I'll be honest, some haven't met with my expectations. While many lenses in the system are superb by any measure, a large number are what you might call consumer-grade glass good, but not acceptable for professional work by today's...

This lens is excellent for portrait, street, sports and landscapes. For a lens of this range, it is compact, beautifully balanced and light weight compared to equivalents used on full frame or APS-C DSLR's.
